Much of my recent work has to do with the flora and fauna around me and different aspects of their ecosystems. I also find inspiration in trips we have taken to places like Japan, China, Australia, Greece, Hong Kong, Turkey, and the Danube River valley. What always draws me back is nature in all of its richness and detail. Whether it is the morass of the garden floor, the depth of a landscape, or the complexity of an insect, through art I aim to see more.
My earliest memories are of wanting to draw, loving to color, and of looking intensely at the natural world. I thought I wanted to be a biologist since all my after school time was spent outside peering into (and eventually falling into) neighborhood streams, ponds, and marshes. I would inevitably come home with a new specimen for my collections; rocks, bones, bugs, and dissectible specimens lined my shelves. Then came the shift, biology class was surprisingly disappointing, and art class was incredibly rewarding. Now, through painting, I bring the things I love together.
I studied art and art history at Boston University and the American College in Paris. For eight years after university, I had the privilege of studying with two wonderful and nationally known artists. With Frank Frederico (PSA, NWS), I learned how to capture the feel and emotion of an outdoor scene and also internalized his exuberance for color and brushwork. I also worked with Peter Seltzer (PSA). Peter is known for his brightly colored, exotic still life paintings. With Peter, I learned patience, precision, and the art of looking. From these two influences, and good friends, I work to blend precise realism with my love of a painterly approach outdoors.
I am represented by The Wright Gallery in Cape Porpoise.
